love how the lining paper (left) and fly paper (right) go together

love the combination of materials for this artist's book

last weekend of books & boxes, the sequel

We covered much ground between Friday night and Saturday.
I stayed until 9:45pm Friday night and 4:30pm on Saturday! Two extra hours of work time!

On Friday night we learned the Book on Three Tapes structure. This is the book that has exposed tapes (made by wrapping and gluing Tyvek around decorative paper) and beads (optional). The running stitch holds it all together. It is a relatively fast structure to put together. Adding the beads is interesting and effective. Or letting the long stitch show over the tapes is also beautiful. This book is one that I've admired often and wondered about! I'm so happy to know this structure. I made three books using it.

One of the books is my 'artist's book' (a book that has content) to hold the black & white photos I took in Italy this past summer. I've spent many hours in the darkroom the past two weeks, working on printing. My hope is to continue printing and adding the photos to the book. I used a map of Italy for the cover paper, a Florentine paper for the cover lining, Canson Mi-Tientes  and glassine paper for the interior pages.

Slip Case Construction

The slipcase for the two needle book is a small thing and it requires some precision calculations. However, once the mat board pieces are cut to the correct size the assembly is a piece of cake. My photos are not in sequence, something I'm finding is a problem with this blog template.

The photo here shows the box glued up: (scroll down to see the start of the process)
adjusting the sides gently with a pencil end

sizing up the paper, glue only the path of the box sides

starting to place the box along the wrap

snipping the creases to rid excess paper before tucking into the box (with glue)

glue down the edges

snip paper at front edge of box to fold inside

tucked in front, continue to glue edges to sides of box

measuring for side paper (decorative)

here is where the process starts:

this was supposed to be the first photo, showing the mat board pieces for the slip case

MATH!!

a lovely book and slip case

PLACE A RULER ON THE CUTTING BOARD FOR ACCURACY

glue the box with tacky glue

store tacky glue flat, when using put in container like this so the flow is easier

gluing on the other side

Two Needle Book assembly

use T-pin and template to predrill holes 1/2" from top and bottom edge

not exactly lined up!

follow directions in setting up the stack (foredge toward you and bottom cover first)

start one needle in each hole, from inside to outside, tie a bow inside

crisscross needles on the inside of each signature

move up one signature at a time, use the kettle stitch after the third and each subsequent signature

see how the kettle stitch looks? like a chain stitch, dip the needle down one layer, back up, and through itself
